A visit to Upper Shirley Vineyards, perched above one of the most scenic bends on the James River, will exceed your expectations. Gazing across the water reveals an island bird sanctuary where Bald Eagles regularly flock, an ideal setting to enjoy an award-winning wine or one of the treats from the eclectic bistro menu. The boutique winery is an easy find in Charles City, just 20 miles southeast of downtown Richmond.

Bathed by river breezes, the fruit grown among the 22 acres of vines is tended by hand using age-old methods. It’s hard work, but one taste of the wine will uncork the passion behind the craft. The deep Pamunkey River soil includes European varieties, vitis vinifera, selected to match the nutrient-rich terroir. Petit Verdot, Viognier, Merlot and lesser-known Tannat flavor an extensive list of wines.
